Introduction
- Tell the students you are going to talk about their five senses. Ask if anybody can tell you the five senses. We will also review the senses and what they do. The lesson includes a hands-on/interactive component where students will be asked to use their senses.
Tasks
After an in depth discussion about the 5 senses students will draw/record/paste objects on a sheet of paper and write how each sense can be used with each object. Students will be able to create a multimedia poster using Glogster and make a word cloud using Tagxedo.
Process
- Discuss what the 5 senses are and what they do.
- The teacher will provide a variety of materials for students ranging from feathers to sandpaper and everything in between, students must pick 10 items.
- After students have picked their 10 items they will glue it onto a construction paper and they must write a small description of the material and what it felt like to them.
- Students must turn in their activity so it can be placed on the activity wall.
- Afterwards, students will then create a multimedia poster using Glogster that include images of objects with the description of how it looks and feels.
- After the students are done with their multimedia poster, the teacher must revise it.
- After it has been revised, teacher will ask for volunteers to present their poster to the class.
- After this activity students will create a word cloud using Tagxedo.
- Before creating their word cloud students must make a list of the words of the sense, body part, and two examples of each sense.
- Students must get list revised.
- After their list has been revised, students can create their word cloud including the sense, body part, and two examples of each sense.
- Students will print out their word cloud and it will placed in their portfolios.
Resources
ISTE for Teachers:
7. Analyst- Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and
support students in achieving their learning goals. Educators:
a. Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate
competency and reflect on their learning using technology.
b. Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative
and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs,
provide timely feedback to students and inform instruction.
c. Use assessment data to guide progress and communicate with
students, parents and education stakeholders to build student
self-direction.
ISTE NET for Students:
3. Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools
to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make
meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Students:
a. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate
information and other resources for their intellectual or
creative pursuits.
b. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance
of information, media, data or other resources.
c. curate information from digital resources using a variety
of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that
demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues
and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing
answers and solutions.
TEKS:
(b) Knowledge and skills:
(1) Foundations: observation and perception. The student develops and expands visual literacy skills using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning, understanding, and applying the elements of art and principles of design. The student uses what the student sees, knows, and has experienced as sources for examining, understanding, and creating artworks. The student is expected to:
(A) identify similarities, differences, and variations among subjects in the environment using the senses; and
(B) identify the elements of art, including line, shape, color, texture, and form, and the principles of design, including emphasis, repetition/pattern, and balance, in nature and human-made environments.
Evaluation
Conclusion
The teacher is aware of what students know and don't know. By the end of this lesson student will be able to know how to create a multimedia poster and word cloud, and be able to interact with classmates by sharing their posters. The teacher can work in with students in small groups for those who need extra assistance.
